染色パターン：細胞質
ロイシンに富むケラタン硫酸プロテオグリカンの１つである。
正常皮膚では真皮間質の膠原線維にびまん性に陽性。表皮内汗管のporoid cell・毛包漏斗部の角化細胞・脂腺細胞で陽性。一方，表皮正常角化細胞では陰性である。
皮膚腫瘍においては，大部分のBowen病で陽性。日光角化症で陰性であり，Bowen病とBowenoid typeの日光角化症の鑑別診断に有用。
また，Takayama らの検討では，hidroacanthoma simplex(HS) とクローン型の脂漏性角化症(SK) との鑑別診断に有用であり，下表のように，HSでは陽性，SKでは陰性である。

さらに，近年の報告では，肺腺癌細胞を含む胸水中ではlumican が高発現しているとの報告もある。この場合，肺腺癌細胞自身ではなく，腫瘍細胞周囲の線維芽細胞がlumican を産生している可能性が示唆されている。
