CD43
Recommended control tissues: Lymphoid tissues.
In normal tissues, this antibody react with T-cells, histiocytes, myelogenous cells, plasma cells, megakaryocytes, and EBV-infected B-cells (John KC Chan. Tumors in lymphoretiucular system in Flercher et al. Diagnostic histopathology of tumors p1106).
Diagnostic utility: Should not be used as T-cell marker, because of less specificity. Some B-cell lymphoma may show positive.
Mainly used for diagnosis of B-cell lymphoma by recognition of abrreant expression in B-cells, namely CD20+/CD43+ cells. Normal B-cell are CD20+/CD43-.
Aberrant expression of CD43 is not type-specific phenomenon, most commonly seen in mantle cell lymphoma and CLL/SLL,, some marginal zone B-cell lymphoma and diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, and rare in follicular lymphoma.
To recognize aberrant expression of CD43, careful comparing CD3 and CD43 is necessary. Be careful for the presence of normal CD43 positive cells, such as plasma cells or myelogenous cells.
Terminal ileum B-cells may show aberrant CD43 expression even in the normal settings(Applied Immunohistochemistry & Molecular Morphology. 13(2):138-141, June 2005)
