histone deacetylase 8はnucleosomal histoneのアセチル化をregulateするnuclear enzymeで、正常では平滑筋への分化を示している組織に特異的に染色される。 Am J Surg Pathol 2006年３月号に、子宮の平滑筋腫瘍と子宮内膜間質腫瘍endometrial stromal tumors(EST)の鑑別に有効との報告がなされた。 他のsmooth muscle markers (h-caldesmon, desmin, and smooth muscle myosin)などとともに平滑筋系腫瘍のsensitive markerであり、特にepithelioid smooth muscle tumorsではより良好な感度を示したという。ESTでもsmooth muscle differentiationを示した部分のみに陽性となり、通常のESTの部分やsex cord differentiation部分には全て陰性であった。
